Ted's Excellent Pictures Taken in Stone Town, Zanzibar
November 2018
Zanzibar Island is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania
- Captured by Portugal in 1503, 5 years after being visited by Vasco da Gama,
it was settled by the Portuguese from 1560, until ...
- Oman took over from 1650; made it the capital of Oman(!) in 1840
- Tanganyika, the mainland African trustee territory of Great Britain, achieved independence in 1961
- Zanzibar gained independence in 1962; the Sultan of Oman was deposed in 1964
- The union of Tanzania was created 1963 from the two names Tanganyika + Zanzibar
- It is an "uneasy alliance", with some locals resenting rule from the mainland
(despite being only ~30km offshore from the capital Dar es Salaam)
- Many locals still have close ties to Oman; some still talk about returning to an independent state
