I was staying in Luxor for one week, and to see the pyramids I did a one day fly-in/fly-out trip to Cairo and hired a taxi driver for the day at the airport hotel. After taking a few pictures from this lookout that the driver suggested, I was lucky to hit a brief moment in time when there were no cars on the road and only the solitary camel & rider in perfect position. This picture also shows how close the pyramids are to sprawling Cairo (population: >10,000,000).

I usually try to avoid having other travellers in my pictures because I find them distracting. This time I think the positon of the couple, and because it's just the two of them, improved the photo.

This was taken from a mirador set up near Ayers Rock Resort (partly seen by the white building to the left). Instead of a close-up, I like this view from a distance showing how it stands out from the flat, red-sand lowland. The sun is high so unfortunately the rock doesn't have the red glow it gets at sunset.

I was staying on the beach in San Jose del Cabo for one week, and in order to photograph the arch I skipped the package tours and got a cheap ticket on a public bus with locals to Cabo San Lucas then found my way to the harbour where there were glass bottom boats for hire. Well worth the effort.

Out of 3 weeks in Peru and Bolivia, I had only one full day at Machu Picchu. I took the first bus up this morning, and found it was completely obscured by low clouds. After all the trouble getting here, I was convinced I would leave without a single picture of the main attraction. Then, slowly, the clouds started to break up and burn off. When all clear, I got my pictures before the crowds arrived. All's well that ends well.

Despite language barriers, I managed to negotiate with a Beijing taxi driver to drive me around to some sights that day for 600 Hong Kong dollars (about USD80). This is before the Chinese yuan was convertable, when tourists had to use separate banknotes marked 'Foreign Exchange Certificate'. I thought I paid too much, but he didn't seem too excited about getting a good lump of hard currency. Still, I've had worse taxi drivers.

Picture taken from the popular river boat cruise down Li Jiang between Guilin and Yangshuo, where the main attractions are the many karst mountains and the cormorant fishing. I probably wouldn't have used this picture if she hadn't turned and smiled at just the right moment.

I only had 2 nights in St Petersburg, and was alarmed to find out when I got there Sunday that Peterhof is closed Mondays. Fortunately there was just enough time to see it Tuesday before catching the train to Helsinki. And the fab weather continued too.

It's pretty hard to get a picture of the Treasury without any people in the frame. I believe this was taken about 6:30 in the morning when it was all in the shade, and shows why Petra is called the Rose City.

I managed to aim the fish-eye lens such that it didn't distort the camel much while getting a nice curve in the background. I like the way my shadow shows how close I had to get to him with the ultra-wide-angle lens.

I rented a 4x4 to reach the attractions at the farthest corners of the island (nothing is more than an easy 20 minutes drive away). This is the largest and most photographed ahu (stone platform). Even though the roads were almost deserted I got distracted enough by the sights everywhere to crash into one of the few other vehicles around - a classic VW microbus full of German tourists. This is why I don't own a car!
